It is very heart-breaking to see how our government treated people from the most-left province in Indonesia, Papua.
50000 military forces are staying in Papua right now, to make sure the movement of independent Papua (Free West Papua or also Organisasi Papua Merdeka) can be suppressed as hard as possible. Violent, most of the time, is way how they did and do it.
This sad and brutal story started from the time of President Soekarno. He wants to get Papua, so that Indonesian government can get all advantages of the natural resources. During the international referendum (the time when Papuans has to choose either to join Indonesia or being independent), Soekarno commanded the Indonesian Army (TNI) to do everything it takes to make sure that the result of this referendum is that Papuans want to join Indonesia.
Until here, everything still look the same with what I have learnt during elementary until senior high school in Indonesia. What you don’t know is that the important people that brought the voices independent of Papua, was get caught and put into jail. These people was electrocuted and got beaten up. They were forced to vote to join Indonesia. The leader of this movement at that time said what one of the TNI officer told him: “If you want to stay alive, just vote for Indonesia. Otherwise, we are going to cut your tongue and kill you”.
At that time, many villages just burnt down. The women were raped in front of her husband and children. The men were killed and their penises were cut into pieces and fed it to the wives.
Indonesian government use uncivilized way to suppress Papuan voices. Their dream to live normal and happy ever after.
Indonesia afraid to lose them. It means a lot of money. All natural resources in Papua are managed by some filthy fat government officer. Of course, they don’t want to lose all of this. That’s why they did and are doing all of this.
And until now, this information can be keep hidden by the government. The filmmaker of this movie even had to disguise as a tourist to be able to shoot and to make this movie.
Our government need to be rebooted. Those devil people who is sitting in the top of the government or in the top of the army forces should be replaced by younger honest and hardworking generation. Indonesia needs to stop the aggression and replace it with sending more money for the development in Papua.
This film really shows the truth about this violent conduct to Papua people. It makes them trauma and don’t want to be called Indonesian. They are not Indonesian, they said. They are Melanesian.
Although this film is really good and encourage us to do something for them (which eventually we have to start from the government), I don’t believe the objectivity level of this documentary. This doc has been made by Australian and most of the time being told by a Papuan that get an asylum from Australian government. The funding of this movie also from Australian. Thus, just do the math.
Kudos to Charlie Hill-Smith, Jamie Nicolai, and John Cherry for the superb documentation. Please
check the website and make sure you watch
this documentary.
